Just as happened when it became known that Ben Affleck would play Batman, now the fans of literary phenomenon '50 Shades of Grey' have risen in anger and are demanding the replacement of the actors designated to play the main parts in the cinema adaptation. On Monday it was revealed that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson would play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, the lead roles in the film to be directed by Sam Taylor-Wood and based on the books by E.L. James. Nevertheless, fans of the books do not seem to be happy with the choices, and, through the internet platform Change.org are asking the producers to change their minds and selct the actors Matt Bomer (from the series White Collar) and Alexis Bledel (from the series The Gilmore Girls).

The petition, started by Twitter user @dontouchmypatch now has, since Sunday, more than 72,000 signatures. “Matt Bomer is perfect for Christian Grey and Alexis Bledel the perfect actress for Anastasia Steele”, maintains the creator of the petition. “If they are not chosen, no one should be”.

The producer Dana Brunetti has not hesitated to respond to the criticism. From her Twitter profile she has said: “There are many things to take into account when casting, not only physical appearance. Talent, availability, the desire to play the role, chemistry between the actors, etc. If your favourite actor isn’t cast then it probably has had something to do with these reasons. Try to remember that and take it into account”.

The confirmation of Johnson, 23, comes after months of speculation over names such as Emma Watson (Hermione in the Harry Potter saga) for the role of Anastasia, who in the book succumbs to Grey’s charms. Hunnam, 33, from Newcastle, was already a possible candidate among others such as Canadian Ryan Gosling. Dakota Johnson made her debut alongside her mother in the film ‘Crazy in Alabama’, 1999, directed by Antonio Banderas.

’50 Shades of Grey’ is the first part of a trilogy which has turned E.L James into a millionaire and which narrates the story of a sadomasochistic relationship between an innocent young girl and a powerful businessman with a dark past.
